How to perform a web-based BlackBerry software update

HOW-TO / 01.14.11 / tywill1

In case you missed it right before the holidays, Sprint announced the availability of BlackBerry® 6 for the BlackBerry® Bold™ 9650 and BlackBerry® Curve™ 9330 smartphones. As a result of this, I’d like to show you just how easy it is to update your BlackBerry smartphone using web-based BlackBerry software updates.

To check for updated BlackBerry software, simply connect your BlackBerry smartphone to your computer and browse to using your computer’s Internet browser. On this page, click “Check for Updates” to see if updated software is available for your BlackBerry smartphone. If new BlackBerry software is available, the dialog in the image above will appear.

All you need to do now is select Get Update and, if prompted, download and install the BlackBerry® Desktop Software Component tools. These tools allow you to update your BlackBerry smartphone software, add or remove applications, obtain support for additional languages, and to turn notifications for future BlackBerry smartphone software updates on or off (although I recommend to have updates turned on so that you know when new software and features are available for your device).

After installation of the BlackBerry Desktop Software components, the update process will start and shortly afterwards your BlackBerry smartphone will be updated.

If you want to double-check if your BlackBerry smartphone is capable of being updated to BlackBerry 6, please visit and review the information provided. (Also, please check back often as, pending carrier certifications, BlackBerry 6 will be available in the months ahead.) If you do not own a BlackBerry smartphone that offers a BlackBerry 6 update, you can still use web-based software updates to identify if you are using the latest version of BlackBerry® Device Software. If you have been able to update your BlackBerry smartphone to BlackBerry 6, I highly recommend checking out the BlackBerry 6 website, as you’ll be able to learn about all of the cool new features available.

You can also learn more about web-based BlackBerry smartphone updates by reviewing KB16071, located in the BlackBerry Technical Solution Center.

As always, for more information about your particular BlackBerry smartphone, the User Guide can always be found at If you have any questions, please leave a comment on this post or visit the BlackBerry Support Forums!
