Recently the Twitter® for BlackBerry® smartphones 2.0 app was updated with several changes and new features based on customer feedback. Today I’d like to provide an overview of the Trends feature, since it’s changed slightly in this latest update – not to mention it’s a favorite that I use a lot. I’ll also show you a bunch of useful shortcuts that you can take advantage of while using the Twitter app.
The first thing you’ll notice after logging in to Twitter for BlackBerry smartphones 2.0 is the new color scheme and a few changes to the navigation bar. One of the icons listed on the navigation bar allows you to access Trends, which is a great way to see what people are talking about on Twitter. When you tap or select the Trends button (circled in red below), by default you’ll be presented with Worldwide Trends.
One of the nice features offered by Trends in Twitter for BlackBerry smartphones 2.0 is the ability to view Trends for a specific geographic location, such as a country or a particular city. To see what locations are available, tap or select the blue banner that says Worldwide (circled in red below) and you’ll be shown the following screen. Within this screen, tap or select the country you’d like to view, or one of the cities within it.
After selecting your preferred geographic location, you’ll be shown a listing of what’s currently trending in Twitter. You can then tap on the trending topic and a search will be performed, allowing you to view what other Twitter users are saying about that topic. You’ll also have the option to save a particular topic so you can come back and view the latest results at any time by using the Save This Search feature. Saved Searches can be accessed from the Search icon.
Twitter for BlackBerry smartphones 2.0 includes several shortcuts that I like to use quite frequently – the navigation shortcuts in particular. However, something to keep in mind is that some of these shortcuts may not work for you depending on the typing input language you have specified on your BlackBerry smartphone. With that said, listed below are all of the shortcuts!
To reply to a direct message or tweet, highlight the direct message or tweet. Press the exclamation point (!) key.
To reply to all of the people that are mentioned in a tweet, highlight the tweet. Press the question mark (?) key.
To repost a tweet, highlight the tweet. Press the period (.) key.
To compose a tweet, press the comma (,) key.
To compose a direct message, on the Direct Messages screen, press the comma (,) key.
To refresh your tweet timeline, press 5.
For those that are wondering, the shortcut listing above can be found in the Twitter for BlackBerry smartphones 2.0 user guide. To view the user guide, visit http://docs.blackberry.com and select BlackBerry Smartphone manuals, followed by Social. You can also view the user guide for several other applications which contain shortcuts as well!
