How to use Word substitution, aka custom text shortcuts, using PRIV

Using Word substitution, aka custom text shortcuts, you can create shortcuts for frequently used phrases or information. When you type the shortcut, the phrase or info is inserted for you. For example, if I enter ‘shipaddress’ while composing something such as an email or BBM, after I hit the space key my device will replace ‘shipaddress’ with my shipping address.

This feature can help you save time and increase your efficiently so, to help you get started, here’s everything you’ll want to know!

Note: In order to use Word substitution you must use the BlackBerry Keyboard. If you are using a 3rd party keyboard, switch back to the BlackBerry Keyboard by going to priv_ws_gear Settings > Language & input, tapping Current Keyboard and selecting the BlackBerry Keyboard.

By default, PRIV includes several text shortcuts as per the following screenshot.

To review the other preloaded shortcuts, and add some of your own complete the following steps:

  1. Using two fingers, swipe down once from the top of the screen
  2. Tap priv_ws_gear Settings > Language & input > BlackBerry Keyboard Settings
  3. Tap Prediction and correction > Word Substitution
  4. Complete one of the following:
    • Tap for all languages if you want to use the shortcut in every installed language
    • Tap on your current language, i.e. English (Canada) to use the shortcut in that language only
  5. Tap and enter the following:
    • Shortcut: the shortcut phrase, i.e. bb
    • Target: the substituted text, i.e. BlackBerry
    • Tip: Word substitution entries can span multiple lines
    • Optionally check Always use this capitalization
  6. Tap priv_ws_back to save your new entry

To edit or delete a text shortcut

  1. Using two fingers, swipe down once from the top of the screen
  2. Tap priv_ws_gear Settings > Language & input > BlackBerry Keyboard Settings
  3. Tap Prediction and correction > Word Substitution
  4. Tap the language where the text shortcut appears
  5. Tap on the shortcut and complete one of the following:
    • Edit the shortcut as needed followed by tapping priv_ws_back to save your edit
    • Tap priv_ws_trash to delete the shortcut
