How to Record and Share HD videos with BlackBerry 7

Recording HD video with a BlackBerry 7 OS smartphone

After getting my hands on a BlackBerry® Torch™ 9860 smartphone, I’ve started to create a lot more videos because playing them back on a 3.7” high-resolution display is a great way to relive moments I’ve caught on camera. Since I can capture videos in 720p HD as well, I’m recording a lot more footage for home movies I want to create, so if you’re in the same boat I am, I’ve put together a few things you should know about recording and sharing HD videos.

For this post, I’ll be featuring the BlackBerry Torch 9860 smartphone, which includes a 5MP camera with 720p HD video recording capabilities. When it comes to capturing live video, a few more features offered by the BlackBerry Torch 9860 smartphone are as follows:

  • Flash
  • Continuous auto focus
  • Face detection
  • Image Stabilization
  • Geo-tagging
  • 4X digital zoom (still images only)
  • Zero shutter lag

Recording Videos

The first thing you should do after opening the video camera icon (displayed in the media folder that appears on the home screen) is press the Menu key and select Options.

  • Video Light – In low lighting conditions, the video light can improve the quality of videos that you record.
  • Image Stabilization – This setting helps reduce blurriness that is caused by slight movements of the video camera when you are recording a video.
  • Scene Mode – Change the scene mode in the video camera to optimize the settings for different environments.
  • Video Format – The larger the video, the more storage space the video requires.
  • Storage – The BlackBerry Torch 9860 smartphone comes with 4GB of built-in storage that I can use, with the ability to insert a microSD card with up to 32GB of storage space as well. If you don’t have a microSD card inserted, videos will be stored on your device.

Since we’ve reviewed the options, let’s take a look at the interface when open the video camera.

Underneath the size, filename and length of the video you just recorded, the following options are available:

1. Continue recording
2. Stop
3. Play
4. Send – Depending on your data plan, which apps and services you have set up, and the size and length of the video, you will be shown several sharing options. On my BlackBerry smartphone for example, I can select from the following options:

  • Upload to YouTube®
  • Text Message
  • Email
  • BlackBerry® Messenger Contact
  • Bluetooth®

5. Rename
6. Delete

On top of sharing videos from your BlackBerry smartphone, you can also import the videos on to your PC or Mac using BlackBerry® Desktop Software. An important thing to keep in mind is that you cannot import pictures or videos if encryption for media files on your BlackBerry smartphone is turned on. For more information about encryption, check out the user guide for your BlackBerry smartphone.

2. On your computer, in the Applications folder, click the BlackBerry Desktop Software icon.

  • To import new pictures from your smartphone to your computer, select the Pictures check box.
  • To delete your media files from your smartphone after they are imported to your computer, select the Delete imported media from your device check box.

To remove videos, select the Files option, and then browse to the Videos folder in one of the following locations (depending on what you specified as your storage option when recording videos on your smartphone):

  • Device Memory – Device -> Home -> User -> Videos
  • Media Card – BlackBerry -> Videos

Since your videos are now on your PC or Mac, you can use your favorite video editing software to create a home movie, or start sharing your videos right away using the dozens of options provided by the internet.
