Five Tip Friday – BlackBerry Hub on PRIV

FIVE TIP FRIDAY / 04.22.16 / tywill1

Whether you use the BlackBerry Hub a little or a lot check out the five tips below to learn more about personalizing your hub experience and some pretty awesome features such as snoozing, or custom alerts 😀

  1. Review, and set your BlackBerry Hub settings
  2. Snooze messages until a specific time, location, or a connection
  3. Set custom alerts for messages from specific contacts, or marked high importance
  4. Color-code your BlackBerry Hub accounts
  5. Increase your productivity using keyboard shortcuts

Review, and set your BlackBerry Hub settings

Before we dig into other tips it’s important to go over how to set up some of the most common features in BlackBerry Hub, such as what happens when you delete a message, or how the BlackBerry Hub message list appears. While the list below is pretty long, I highly recommend taking a few minutes to review and customize your device as these fundamental changes can make a big difference.

  1. Go to the BlackBerry Hub
  2. Tap 3bar in the top left, followed by tapping Settings
  3. Tap General Settings
  4. Within, set the following options:
    • Conversation view – If enabled, messages with the same subject will be grouped together. Turn this off to have messages appear individually instead
    • Conversation order – If Conversation view is enabled, use this option to sort conversations by new messages first, or old message first
    • Condensed list view – If enabled, your message list will maximize usage of available screen space (see screenshots below)
    • Show Name First – If enabled, the sender name appears on the first line and the subject on the second line
    • Show Sent Emails – Turn this off to hide sent emails (to view these if disabled, see the tip below)
    • Show Read Files Emails – Turn off to hide filed messages that have been marked as read (to view these, if disabled, see the tip below)
    • Delete Message Confirmation – If enabled, a dialog with an undo option will appear each time you delete a message
    • Delete on – Select from HUB only, or HUB and Server, or optionally select Prompt to get asked each time you delete a message if you’d like to remove from the device only, or your device, and mail server.
    • Left and Right Swipe Gesture – While viewing the message list, swipe left on a message to delete it, or swipe right to snooze the message (see tip #2), or set a different action when swiping left or right such as None, Delete, Snooze, Flag/Clear flag, File, Mute, or Mark read/unread
    • Download Images Automatically – If enabled, messages that contain inline images will download and show any inline images automatically. Keep in mind this setting can result in high data usage depending on how many messages you view daily.

Tip: If you hide Sent items or Filed messages, to view these, tap followed by tapping on the down arrow next to the email account that contains the messages. Next, tap the Sent items folder, or the folder you filed a message to.

Snooze messages until a specific time, location, or a connection

Hands down one of my favorite features in BlackBerry Hub is the ability to snooze a message and receive a notification about the message later on. Not only can you snooze until a specific time, you can also snooze until you arrive at specific location, or your device obtains a specific Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth connection which takes this feature to the next level!

For example, I use this feature whenever I’m grocery shopping. All I do is send myself an email with my grocery list, snooze the message using the location option, select my grocery store, and the next time I pull into the grocery store parking lot I receive a notification with my grocery list.

To try out this feature on your PRIV complete the following:

  1. While viewing the BlackBerry Hub, swipe right on a message
  2. Tap one of the following icons:

After completing the above, you will receive a notification about the message when the snooze settings you have set are met. For example, if I snoozed a message using the connection option, and selected my home Wi-Fi network, as soon as I pull into my driveway (and Wi-Fi connects), a notification appears on my device.

It’s important to add that snoozing a message will hide it in the BlackBerry hub message list. As a result, to view previously snoozed messages, tap BlackBerry Hub along the top of your display followed by Snooze

Tip: In addition to swiping right on a message, swiping left on a message will delete it, but you can change these settings. To do this, tap 3bar followed by Settings and finally General Settings. Within, set your desired swipe actions using the Left Swipe Gesture, and Right Swipe Gesture.

Set custom alerts for messages from specific contacts, or marked high importance

Using custom alerts you have the ability to have your PRIV trigger an alert or notification based on variables such as the message subject line, who the message was sent to, or importance, for example.

To help you get familiar with this feature, and the various options you can use to trigger alerts, review the steps below:

  1. Go to the BlackBerry Hub
  2. Tap 3bar in the top left, followed by tapping Settings
  3. Tap Custom alerts followed by Add rule and complete the following:
    • Set a name using Rule Name
    • Set Accounts to determine which accounts the rule applies to
    • Set From if alerts for a specific contact are desired
    • Set Sent to for alerts when messages include a specific contact, i.e. your boss
    • Set Subject for alerts on specific subject lines
    • For more specific alert triggers, tap Advanced and select any of the following:
    • Message Received – Sent Only to me, When I’m on the To: line, or When I’m on the Cc: line
    • Message Important – Set to High, or Low
    • In Folder – Set to receive an alert when a filed message is received
    • Has Attachment – Set to receive an alert for messages that contain attachments
  4. After setting your desired alert options, tap Next at setup the notification settings
    • Enable Notifications – Ensure this is enabled
    • Notification sound – Set the notification sound that will occur
    • Heads-up notifications – Select Off, or All emails
    • Vibrate – Select Off, Once, or up to 5 times
    • LED notification color – Set the color of the LED notification
    • Enable level 1 alert – If enabled, notification settings are overridden and your alerts will trigger
    • Enable persistent level 1 alert – If Enable level 1 alert is turned on, this setting will keep producing the alert until you dismiss it

Color-code your BlackBerry Hub accounts

If you have several accounts set up on PRIV consider using the Account color option to make it easier to distinguish which account received a message.

To add some color to your device complete the following steps.

  1. Go to the BlackBerry Hub
  2. Tap 3bar in the top left, followed by tapping Settings
  3. Within Accounts tap Account color and set your preferred color
  4. Tap the back arrow in the top left when finished
  5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 for each of your various accounts

After completing these steps the color you selected will appear in three locations. The first location is the notification shade, shown whenever a new message arrives. The second location is in the BlackBerry Hub, along the left side of the screen. Finally, if you tap 3bar while viewing the hub, associated colors appear to the right of your various accounts.
