Five Tip Friday – Five Tips for Unleashing the Power of BlackBerry Messenger

Happy Friday #TeamBlackBerry! Today I’m going to provide you with some tips for using a few BlackBerry® Messenger (BBM™) features you might or might not be familiar with. Simply put, I don’t know what I would do without BlackBerry Messenger — I’m sure there are days I say more to my wife over BBM™ than I do face to face! Meet me after the break for some tips to further cement BBM into your life.

1. BBM Connected Apps

Many apps and games available from the BlackBerry App World™ storefront have the ability to connect to BBM. This means you can update your BBM profile, chat with your contacts from within apps, or post high scores from your favorite game to your BBM status. You can view BBM-connected apps for download by pressing the Menu Key and selecting Explore BBM Connected Apps.

An app or game with the ability to connect to BBM will prompt you for the connection when it is run for the first time. To view apps and games you’ve connected with BBM, complete the following steps:

1. Press the menu key and select “Options”
2. Under BBM Connected applications select “Edit”

All the BBM-connected apps that have been enabled will show in the list. From this screen, you can edit the connection settings or completely disconnect the app from BBM.

2. Use Pictures to get the message across

Sometimes I just can’t find the words to describe what I’m seeing, so I send a picture instead. I guess I have to say it: “A picture is worth a thousand words!”

To share a picture with a BBM contact, take a new picture or select an existing one, and then:

1. While viewing a picture press the Menu key
2. Select “Send” and then choose BBM Contact
3. Select a BBM contact and then choose “Send”.

The contact will see a message indicating that you have sent an image and will be shown a thumbnail view of the picture. They can select the picture to view it, then press the Menu key followed by “Save Image” to keep the picture.

Bonus: Have you been sent a picture that you want to keep? Make sure it’s the highest possible quality before you save it. Press the Menu key while viewing the picture, select “Request Higher Quality Picture” if available, and the sender will be prompted to re-send the picture at full quality. If you don’t see the option then you already received the high quality copy of the picture, so save and enjoy!

3. Share from anywhere – use the power of the BBM Super App

Sharing tweets, web page links and your BlackBerry Traffic™ app ETA are just a few examples of items you can share with your BBM contacts. For example, if you want to send the link to a BBM contact, while viewing the Help Blog website using the Browser, press the Menu Key and select “Send Page Address” followed by “BBM Chat”. You can then select which contacts you’d like to share the link with. You also have the option of sharing information with BBM Groups as well!

Note: One of my favorite BBM-connected apps is BlackBerry Traffic. To learn more about this fantastic app that helps you determine your ETA, check out our blog post on BlackBerry Traffic 3.0.

4. Add a Text Message Contact to BBM

Communicate with friends using BBM and SMS from one location. If you have a friend or family member who uses SMS text messaging, you can add them your BBM contact list, thus removing the need to have the Text Messages Icon showing on your device. To take advantage of this feature, complete these steps:

1. Open BBM, press the Menu key and select “Invite to BBM”
2. Select “Add a contact to text within BBM”
3. Enter the contacts information
4. Select “Add Contact”.

5. Share Your Barcode

If you have ever added a BBM contact by scanning a PIN barcode, you know how easy adding a contact to BlackBerry Messenger can be. Guess what I do to make it easy even easier for co-workers to add me to their contact list? I’ve got my BBM barcode stuck on my desk!

1. From BBM, open your profile by clicking on your profile picture
2. Next to PIN Barcode, select “Show”
3. Press the Menu key select “Save Barcode Image”
4. Transfer your Barcode Image to your computer

5. Print your BBM Barcode.

After I printed it, I added the caption “Missed me? BBM Me!” and stuck up on my desk at work.

Here are a few other places you might consider sticking your bar code:

  • Social Networking Profiles
  • Background Images
  • Posters, Banners and Fliers
  • Business Cards and Advertisements
