BlackBerry PlayBook Video Chat

Because nothing beats face-to-face contact, you can use the two HD video cameras (front- and rear-facing) and stereo speakers on the BlackBerry® PlayBook™ tablet for video-chatting with another person who also has a BlackBerry PlayBook tablet. With the multitasking capabilities of the BlackBerry tablet, you can for example, check movie times online while you chat with a friend or review a presentation while you chat with a colleague.

BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0 adds some new features and enhancements to the Video Chat app, so today I’d like to give you some details and a quick overview of how to get started with Video Chat!

BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0 Video Chat Enhancements

With the release of BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0, enhancements to the Video Chat app include an improved user interface, integration with the new Contacts app, new ways to invite contacts to Video Chat and the ability to display a video chat on an HDMI display.

One of my favorite new features is “Contacts integration”, which means if you have contacts on your BlackBerry PlayBook tablet that have Video Chat information (such as their BlackBerry® ID email address or tablet PIN), they will appear in the Video Chat app within the Video tab. This means that placing a call to one of your Video Chat-enabled contacts is as easy as opening the Video Chat app and tapping on their name.

As mentioned earlier, the ability to display a Video Chat on an HDMI display is an incredible feature that we suggest you try with one of your friends as soon as BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0 is available.

Start a Video (or Audio-Only) Chat

To connect with another BlackBerry PlayBook tablet user, you can launch a Video Chat – or chat using Audio-only if you are still in your pajamas! To initiate a new call, complete the following steps:

1. Open the Video Chat app
2. Specify which type of call you’d like to place

  • To have a video chat, tap the Video Camera icon in the bottom right corner
  • To have an audio-only chat, tap the Microphone icon in the bottom right corner

3. Select a Contact or tap on the Video Chat icon, then enter their BlackBerry ID email address or tablet PIN

You are not required to add contacts in order to start video chats. However, adding contacts means that you don’t have to type your contact’s BlackBerry ID email address or tablet PIN again, or search your call log for the contact information every time you want to start a chat. You can also contact someone you previously had a video chat or audio-only call with by tapping on his or her name while viewing the Call Log.

Turn off the Accept Calls feature

Don’t want to be interrupted by a BlackBerry PlayBook tablet Video Chat request? If you turn off the “Accept Calls” feature, you won’t receive notification of incoming video chat requests, though they’ll still be recorded in your call log. If you have the “Accept Calls” feature set to “Off”, the caller receives a message that you’re busy, so if you’d like to use this setting, complete the following steps:

1. Open the Video Chat app
2. Swipe down from the top bezel to reveal the menu items
3. Set the “Accept Calls” switch to “Off”

You can easily identify if “Accept Calls” is set to “Off” because a red circle with a line through it will appear in the top right corner of the Video Chat app.

Tip: Video Chat does not need to be open in order to receive incoming calls. However, if you set “Accept Calls” to “Off”, you will not be notified of an incoming Video Chat call.
