Do you want to help test out a new application or service that’s nearly final, but hasn’t yet been made available to the general public? If so, all you need to do is head over to BlackBerry® Beta Zone, where you can join beta programs such as BlackBerry® Traffic 2.0.1 and the Facebook® for BlackBerry® smartphones 2.0 Beta 4.
To help get you started with BlackBerry Beta Zone, here are some steps on how to become a member and how to participate:
Step 1 – Register for a BlackBerry Beta Zone account
Open a web browser and head over to http://www.blackberry.com/beta. After reviewing the information presented, click on the “Register Now” link that appears underneath the “Want to Join” banner, which will display the registration form.
You must be a resident of a country listed on the registration form in order to join BlackBerry Beta Zone. New countries are added daily as the site continues to expand. If your country is not listed, you will not be able to register for BlackBerry Beta Zone. For a listing of BlackBerry Beta Zone supported countries, click here.
An important step while signing up is to ensure that you specify your current BlackBerry smartphone PIN number in the registration form. This information is required, as keycodes will be created to unlock applications you install from BlackBerry Beta Zone and they are based on the PIN that’s contained in your BlackBerry Beta Zone profile.
To get your PIN number, select “Options” from your BlackBerry smartphone’s home screen, followed by selecting “Status”. If you upgrade your BlackBerry smartphone in the future, make sure you update your PIN in your BlackBerry Beta Zone profile.
Step 2 – Joining a BlackBerry Beta Zone beta program
After registering and logging into BlackBerry Beta Zone, eligible beta programs will appear on the right-hand side. For this example, let’s join the Facebook for BlackBerry smartphones 2.0 beta program:
After logging into BlackBerry Beta Zone, on the left underneath Eligible Programs, select “(Consumer) Facebook 2.0”
Specify that you’d like to participate and accept the software pilot agreement
Step 3 – Reviewing the Beta Programs details
Review the instructions provided within the Facebook for BlackBerry smartphones 2.0 beta program, such as how a keycode is generated, how to report bugs and how to download the Facebook for BlackBerry smartphones 2.0 beta.
There are two important things you should do before proceeding any further. The first is that you should remove any previous version of the Facebook for BlackBerry smartphones app before installing the new version. Click here for information on how to remove an application from your BlackBerry smartphone.
The second is that you should make a backup of your BlackBerry smartphone using BlackBerry® Desktop Software as a precautionary measure, should an issue occur with installing software. If you require help doing this, click here.
As per the instructions, in order to download Facebook for BlackBerry smartphones 2.0 Beta 4, you’ll need to click on the download link provided using the Browser on your BlackBerry smartphone.
After logging into BlackBerry Beta Zone using your BlackBerry smartphone, click on the Download link, scroll down and click on Download Now to install the Facebook for BlackBerry smartphones 2.0 beta.
Step 5 – Unlocking a BlackBerry Beta Zone beta program Application
An email containing a keycode will be sent to the email address you have specified in your BlackBerry Beta Zone Profile. If you don’t know how to copy and paste text yet, I would recommend reviewing the user guide for your BlackBerry smartphone which can be found at http://docs.blackberry.com.
If you have difficulty pasting the keycode into the Facebook for BlackBerry smartphones 2.0 agreement, hold down the trackpad and select Paste from the pop-up menu that appears as per the screenshot above. If the keycode isn’t accepted, make sure the correct BlackBerry smartphone PIN number is specified in your BlackBerry Beta Zone profile.
After entering your keycode successfully, you’ll be able to start using the Facebook for BlackBerry smartphones 2.0 beta software. All you need to do now is start using the application and providing your feedback, as we’d love to hear your thoughts!
