How to pair your BlackBerry with a Bluetooth Wireless Headset

HOW-TO / 02.04.11 / tywill1

One of the most common questions I hear daily is: how do I pair my Bluetooth®-enabled wireless headset with my BlackBerry® smartphone? In response, I’d like to show you how easy it is to use the Bluetooth functionality on your BlackBerry smartphone to pair with a BlackBerry® Wireless Headset HS-500 (check out this Inside BlackBerry blog post for more about headsets!) in addition to any other Bluetooth-enabled device you might own.

Before we begin, you will want to have a copy of the product documentation that came with your Bluetooth-enabled device. This information is very important as it contains instructions on how to put your Bluetooth-enabled device into pairing mode. If you’re using a BlackBerry product such as the BlackBerry Wireless Headset HS-500, you can find the product documentation for it at the BlackBerry Documentation website or by visiting the BlackBerry Wireless Headset HS-500 User Guide.

So what is pairing mode and why is it important to me?

Pairing mode is what allows a Bluetooth-enabled device to accept a new connection from another Bluetooth-enabled device, such as your BlackBerry smartphone. In order to pair two Bluetooth-enabled devices, one of them must be placed into pairing mode while the other device searches for it. Once the initial connection is made during the pairing process, you will be prompted to accept the connection between the two Bluetooth-enabled devices. You then have the option to trust the connection, which will allow the two Bluetooth devices to communicate with one another without the need to accept the connection request each time.

Now that you are familiar with the pairing process, let’s pair some Bluetooth-enabled devices. In the following example, I’ll pair my BlackBerry® Bold™ 9700 smartphone with a BlackBerry Wireless Headset HS-500.

In order to communicate to the headset using my BlackBerry smartphone, the BlackBerry Wireless Headset HS-500 needs to be in pairing mode. To find out how to put it into pairing mode, I reviewed the User Guide found at the BlackBerry Documentation website, and came across the following section which guides me through the pairing process with my BlackBerry smartphone from start to finish.

Pair the BlackBerry Wireless Headset HS-500 with your BlackBerry device

Before you can use your BlackBerry Wireless Headset HS-500, you must pair it with your BlackBerry device. When you turn on the headset for the first time, the headset is in pairing mode.

  1. If the headset is not in pairing mode, press and hold the Call control key for 5 seconds or until the LED flashes blue and red.
  2. On your BlackBerry device, on the Home screen, click the Manage Connections icon.
  3. Click Set Up Bluetooth.
  4. Click Search.
  5. Click BlackBerry HS-500.
  6. Type the passkey 0000.
  7. Press the Enter key.

After completing the steps above, a message will appear confirming that my BlackBerry smartphone is now paired with my BlackBerry Wireless Headset HS-500! I can now transfer calls to and from the headset while using my BlackBerry smartphone in addition to receiving driving directions from any third-party location-based applications.

Once you identify how to put your Bluetooth-enabled device into pairing mode, discovering it using your BlackBerry smartphone is really quick and easy. The key thing here is knowing how to put your Bluetooth-enabled device into pairing mode. Once that’s completed, Bluetooth pairing is a breeze!
