How to group messages by subject on your BlackBerry

HOW-TO / 01.21.11 / tywill1

One of my colleagues contacted me recently after she read Paul’s Challenge: No Laptops Allowed, on the Inside BlackBerry® for Business blog. She was telling me how she really liked the idea of traveling without her laptop, but she can’t find a way to manage the large amount of email she receives daily on her BlackBerry® smartphone. For that, she relied on her laptop’s email client which allowed her to view her emails in a threaded message view. This would allow her to quickly scan through her emails and avoid overlooking a message that may have been missed as a result of her participating in a very active message thread. Imagine her surprise when I told her she could view her messages in a threaded view by using the Group by Subject feature in BlackBerry 6 on her BlackBerry smartphone!

Provided you are using a BlackBerry smartphone running BlackBerry 6 OS, such as the BlackBerry® Torch™ 9800 smartphone, the BlackBerry® Bold™ 9780 smartphone or the BlackBerry® Style™ 9760 smartphone, you can use this feature. (To find out if BlackBerry 6 is available for your particular BlackBerry smartphone model, check out the following post which provides information on how to perform a web-based BlackBerry software update. Provided your wireless provider supports it, you may be able to upgrade to BlackBerry 6.)

Using a BlackBerry smartphone that is running BlackBerry 6 (or after upgrading to BlackBerry 6 on your current BlackBerry smartphone), all you need to do is complete the following steps to enable message Group by Subject:

  1. Open Messages
  2. Click the Menu button and select Options
  3. Select Message Display and Actions
  4. Toggle Display Style from Singles Messages to Group by Subject

Once you have enabled this feature, your BlackBerry smartphone will organize your inbox contents in threads grouped by subject. To disable this feature, simply complete the steps above and select the option Single Messages instead.

As always, for more information about your BlackBerry smartphone, be sure to check out the BlackBerry User Guide online. If you have any questions about this feature, please leave a comment on this post or visit the BlackBerry Support Forums! Also, don’t forget to follow @BlackBerryHelp if you’re a Twitter® user.
