Here’s a quick overview of how to mark prior messages as read, delete prior messages and jump to the top and bottom of your message list while using a BlackBerry Q10 smartphone.

Note: Depending on how your email account is set up, messages that are removed from your smartphone as a result of using the Delete Prior option will also be removed from your mailbox.

Step One – While viewing the Hub, tap and hold on a date banner and a menu will appear on the right.

Step Two – Select your desired option, or tap and drag the area indicated by the green arrow to expand this menu as per the second screenshot.

If you expand the menu you’ll also notice shortcut keys appear next to the following options:

Next – N (You can also use P for Previous)

To Top – T

To Bottom B

Delete Prior – Del

Don’t forget to take advantage of the context menu in the bottom left corner in case you’d like to manage a specific account as well! Combined with shortcuts, these features can really help you manage a lot of messages quickly. To learn more about your device as well more shortcuts, make sure you check out the Help app as well!

Do you have a question about managing messages? Leave a comment and let me know!

If you use iCloud for email, contacts and calendar access, follow the steps below to add these services to your BlackBerry Z10. Once you have iCloud set up on your Z10 you can send and receive email as well as synchronize your contacts and calendar wirelessly.

Adding an iCloud account to a BlackBerry Z10

From the Home screen, swipe down from the top of the screen

Select Settings > Accounts

If this is the first email or social networking account you are setting up, select Email, Contacts or Calendar

If you have other email or social networking accounts set up already, select Add Account, then select the type of account you want to add.

Enter your iCloud.com account login credentials and tap Next

Optionally change additional settings such as synchronization preferences for your iCloud.com contacts and calendar

Tap Done.

If you are unable to add your account using the steps above, follow the steps below to integrate your email address, contacts and/or calendar stored in iCloud.com onto your smartphone.

If you use iCloud synchronization but do not use an @icloud.com email address, or email is not enabled, the calendar and contact synchronization can still be set up on a BlackBerry 10 smartphone. To integrate these services you need to follow the advanced integration steps listed below and ensure you are using the email address associated with your Apple ID.

Note: If either an @me.com or @mac.com email address are being used, integrate as an @icloud.com address (i.e. Instead of using user01@me.com, use user01@icloud.com). Apple has aliased @me.com and @mac.com email addresses so they will still receive emails, but any outgoing email will appear as the @icloud.com domain.

Set up iCloud contacts using CardDav:

While viewing the BlackBerry Z10 Home screen, swipe down from the top of the screen

With the release of BlackBerry Link v1.0.1 for Windows, a new feature has been added that allows you to import your local contacts and calendar appointments stored in Microsoft Outlook 2007, 2010, and 2013 to your BlackBerry 10 smartphone. To help you get started, listed below are details on how to install (or upgrade) to the latest version of BlackBerry Link for Windows followed by a quick overview of the new Import From Microsoft Outlook option.

Note: This feature supports import of locally stored contacts and calendar appointments that are not syncing to an online source. If your Microsoft Outlook contacts and calendar appointments are syncing with an online source such as GMail or Microsoft Exchange, simply add these accounts on your BlackBerry 10 device to sync with this data wirelessly.

How to install or upgrade BlackBerry Link for Windows

If you have not installed BlackBerry Link yet, visit http://blackberry.com/blackberrylink and follow the instructions to download and install BlackBerry Link for Windows. If you have already installed BlackBerry Link, you will be automatically prompted to install BlackBerry Link for Windows v1.0.1.

Note: For those that use a Mac, check out the following post for more information > BlackBerry Link 1.0.1 for Mac now available

Importing contacts and calendar data during device migration or during the new device setup wizard

If you are upgrading to a BlackBerry 10 smartphone, after installing BlackBerry Link you’ll be able to import your Outlook contacts and calendar appointments during the device migration process. If you are connecting a BlackBerry 10 smartphone to BlackBerry Link for the first time, you will also be able to import your contacts and appointments during the new device setup wizard.

When prompted, complete the following steps to import your Outlook contacts and calendar details to your new BlackBerry 10 smartphone:

1. On the Import Contacts and Calendar Appointments from Microsoft Outlook screen, click the Transfer Data button.

2. Select the Microsoft Outlook profile containing the data to be imported.

3. Use the checkboxes to select the data to be imported.

Calendar appointments occurring in the last 30 days or in the future will be imported to the BlackBerry 10 smartphone

4. Click Next.

Once you have imported your Outlook contacts and appointments, you can update your contacts at any time by following the instructions in the next section.

Importing Outlook Contacts and Calendar data from BlackBerry Link device settings

If you have already set up your BlackBerry 10 smartphone, complete the following steps to import your Outlook contacts and calendar details:

1. Open BlackBerry Link for Windows.

2. Connect your BlackBerry smartphone to the PC using a USB cable.

3. In BlackBerry Link, click on the name of your BlackBerry smartphone followed by clicking the gear icon in the top right corner to open the settings menu.

4. Click Import From Outlook.

Note: An upcoming release of BlackBerry Link will support full two-way synchronization.

Caution: A pop-up message may appear if you have previously imported data from Microsoft Outlook to your BlackBerry 10 smartphone using BlackBerry Link. Importing the data again will add new contacts and calendar appointments, but will not update any existing records that have been modified on the device.

5. On the Import Your Contacts and Calendar Appointments screen, select the data to import by clicking the Contacts and/or Calendar appointments checkboxes. Click Next followed by Ok to transfer your data.

If so, all you need to do is tap and hold the date banner (circled in red below) while viewing the BlackBerry Hub and a menu will appear containing these options on the right.

Note: Depending how your email account is integrated, messages that are removed from your smartphone as a result using the Delete Prior option will also be removed from your mailbox.

If you have multiple accounts set up, use the context menu that appears in the bottom left corner to view a specific account so you can manage those messages only using these options if desired. For example, in the screenshots above, I’m viewing my Outlook.com account only. You’ll also notice that the menu in the second screenshot shows labels in addition to icons; this is because I tapped the vertical red box that will expand this menu from icons only, to icons and labels.

Looking for some help with a Wi-Fi connection issue on your BlackBerry 10 device? Follow the troubleshooting tips below, and if you need more assistance, there are several great options for additional help that can be found at the end of this post.

Verify that you’re in a Wi-Fi coverage area. If you’re connecting to a home network, check and see if other wireless devices are able to connect. If other devices can’t connect, you might need to reset your router (if you do not run the Wi-Fi network, contact the owner before resetting the wireless router). If you’re connecting to a work Wi-Fi network or a hotspot, talk to your administrator or an employee at the hotspot to ensure you are using correct login details.

Verify that your smartphones Wi-Fi connection is turned on, and review the wireless connection status bar icons to determine your current connection. To learn more about the various icons, check out the Wireless Connections icons section found within the BlackBerry Z10 user guide.

If the Wi-Fi network that you want to connect to doesn’t appear on the Wi-Fi settings screen, it might be hidden. If you know the network name, try connecting to the Wi-Fi network manually. For assistance connecting to a Wi-Fi network manually, check out our blog post on how to connect Wi-Fi networks while using a BlackBerry 10 smartphone.

Verify that Mobile Hotspot mode is turned off. If Mobile Hotspot mode is on, your smartphone can’t connect to a Wi-Fi network. To check, tap Settings on your home screen followed by Network Connections

Your connection might have timed out so try connecting to the Wi-Fi network again.

If none of the suggestions above help solve the connection issue you are encountering, here are two more things you should check:

Verify that the time on your BlackBerry smartphone is synchronized with the network time. If the times are different, it could prevent your smartphone from connecting (for example, if connecting to the network requires you to have a certificate on your smartphone, and the certificate has an expiration date). To review time settings on your smartphone, tap Settings on your home screen followed by Date and Time

If your email account is a work account, your smartphone might prevent connections to certain wireless access points. For more information, contact your administrator.

Still not connected? Here are a few more things you can try:

Verify that the settings for the Wi-Fi network are correct. To find out which settings to use, for a home network, refer to the information that came with your router; for a work Wi-Fi network, talk to your administrator; for a public hotspot, refer to any information provided for the hotspot or talk to an employee at the hotspot who might have details about how to connect.

If you use the Press WPS Button on Router setting in Wi-Fi Protected Setup, check that the Wi-Fi router uses Wi-Fi Protected Setup, and that it is set to send its profile. Verify that another device is not also attempting to connect at the same time, and that not more than one Wi-Fi router within range is set to send its profile. For more information, review the information that came with your router or contact the person who runs the Wi-Fi network

If you use PEAP, EAP-TLS, EAP-FAST, or EAP-TTLS to connect to a Wi-Fi network, verify that you installed the root certificate for the certificate authority server that created the certificate for the authentication server.

To help you interact with a BlackBerry 10 smartphone, you’ll need to learn several gestures that I’ve listed below. For a visual overview, check out the following BlackBerry Z10 How To Demos Touch Screen Gestures Overview or use the steps below the video to try out each gesture.

[YouTube link for mobile viewing]

Peek and/or Access BlackBerry Hub – All of your email, text messages, social networking notifications, missed calls, and voice mail messages can be found in the BlackBerry Hub. To peek at notifications, from the bottom of the screen, slide your finger up just a little bit and the view shrinks to show your notifications. To get to the BlackBerry Hub continue sliding your finger to the right. To return to what you were doing originally, slide your finger back to the left.

Display Notifications – Whether you’re perusing your Home screen or using an application, you can peek at or open the BlackBerry Hub from anywhere on the smartphone. From the bottom bezel, slide your finger up just a little bit and you’ll notice that the current view shrinks to show your notifications.

Scroll and move between items – Use this gesture to scroll through a list, pan a webpage, or move between pictures. You can also use this gesture to move between panels. For example, if you’re looking at the BlackBerry Hub, you can slide your finger to the left to move to the panel that shows all of your running apps.
