If you use a BlackBerry 10 device, here’s a quick overview of how you can organize your pictures into albums. In addition to using the steps provided below, make sure you install BlackBerry Link on your PC or Mac. Here are three reasons why:

  • You can manage your device contents from your PC or Mac using a Wi-Fi or USB connection
  • You can synchronize and/or import photos, videos, music & documents
  • You can use Remote File Access to access files stored on your PC or Mac from your device

Five Tip Friday – BlackBerry 10 File Manager

Happy Friday #TeamBlackBerry! Today’s topic: five tips for managing files on a BlackBerry 10 device.

1. Copy, Move, Select More, Rename, Add Folder and more!

It’s really easy to manage and organize files on your device thanks to the powerful File Manager app. Here are a few options that every BlackBerry 10 device owner should be familiar with:

  • Select More – If you need to work with several files and folders at the same time – e.g. if you would like to create a Zip file of some pictures you took – all you need to do is tap and hold the first file or folder and then tap Select More from the action menu that appears on the right. After doing this, you can select the additional files and folders you want by tapping their icons.
  • Copy or Move – To copy or move files and folders, tap and hold the item or items (see Select More), then tap Copy or Move from the action menu. Navigate to the desired storage location using the context menu in the bottom left corner, then tap the Copy or Move buttons along the top of the screen to complete the action.
  • Renaming Files & Folders – Tap and hold the item you’d like to rename and select Rename from the menu along the right.
  • Adding Folders – Browse to the location where you’d like to create the new folder, tap the action key in the bottom right corner and then select Add Folder.
  • Sort Options – To change the default sort option, tap the action key in the bottom right corner followed by tapping Sort. After doing this, select your desired Sort and Order options to customize how your files and folders are displayed.
  • Share – Tap and hold the file you’d like to share and then tap the action key in the bottom right corner and select Share. A menu will appear with available sharing options such as email, BBM or (my personal favorite) NFC!

Getting started with the BlackBerry 10 Calculator

With the release of BlackBerry 10.1 for BlackBerry 10 devices several changes have been made to the calculator. Here’s an updated overview of the calculator so you can take advantage of some of the extremely handy features built into your device.

For example, the next time you need to convert your weight between pounds and kilograms, finding the answer takes only a few taps of your finger thanks to the unit convertor.

Switch between standard or scientific mode

To change your calculator from standard to scientific mode just swipe left or right while viewing the calculator.

BlackBerry 10 – Working with Zip files

Did you know that the BlackBerry 10 File Manager app supports Zip files, which makes sharing lots of files in a compressed package really easy?

For example, my fiancée took some pretty incredible pictures at our local park, so instead of sending me them one at time she zipped up her favorite pictures and sent me a Zip file using NFC.

Tip: Don’t forget that you can use NFC to share files! All you need to do is find the file you’d like to send, tap Share followed by selecting NFC. After doing this, provided your friend’s device has NFC as well, bump the back of your devices together to send the file.

How to zip files and folders

  1. Open the File Manager app
  2. Touch and hold a file or folder
  3. Optionally tap Select More to select additional files or folders
  4. Expand the action menu that appears on the right by tapping the three white dots
  5. Tap Zip

After completing these steps, you’ll notice a Zip file is created and appears in the folder you are actively viewing. If you want to rename the Zip file, tap and hold the Zip file followed by selecting Rename  from the menu on the right.

Five Tip Friday – BlackBerry 10 Typing Tips

Here are several typing tips you’ll want to know about whether you are using a BlackBerry Q10 or a BlackBerry Z10!

For example, do you know how to enter accented characters or symbols such as a trademark symbol?

1. Inserting Accented Characters & Symbols 

Adding special characters is really easy, all you need to do is hold the key that corresponds with the accent or symbol you’d like to insert. After holding the key for a second you’ll be shown a list of available characters. For example, in the screenshots below I am holding the R key on a BlackBerry Z10. It works the same on a BlackBerry Q10.

Tip: To use accented characters in a text message complete the following steps:

  1. Access BlackBerry Hub
  2. Tap the action key in the bottom right corner
  3. Tap Settings followed by Text Messages
  4. Tap the Advanced icon and set Allow Special Characters to On

How to setup Contacts & Calendar sync using BlackBerry Link 1.1.1 for Windows

With the release of BlackBerry Link 1.1.1 for Windows, a new feature has been added that allows you to synchronize your local Microsoft Outlook contacts and\or calendar data between your computer and a BlackBerry 10 device running BlackBerry 10 OS version 10.1 or later.

Note: Using a Mac? An updated version of BlackBerry Link that offers two way contact synchronization is now available. To get it, visit

Finding and protecting a lost BlackBerry 10 device

BlackBerry Protect includes features that can help you find your BlackBerry 10 device as well as protect your device’s data if your suspect that your device has been lost or stolen.

For example, I couldn’t find my device yesterday so to find it, all I had to do was login to the BlackBerry Protect website located at
http://protect.blackberry.com
 using my BlackBerry ID credentials and I was able to view my device’s location on a map.

After driving over to my friend’s house I still couldn’t find my device, so I logged into BlackBerry Protect website again and was able to make my device play a loud sound for a minute at which point I found it between the couch cushions. This is a great example of why I love BlackBerry Protect because it saved me time and money!

Tip: Using BlackBerry 7.1 or earlier? You can use BlackBerry Protect as well! To learn more, check out our post, 5 reasons why you should use BlackBerry Protect.

With that being said, complete the steps below to turn on BlackBerry Protect on your BlackBerry 10 device:

  1. On your home screen, swipe down from the top of the screen
  2. Tap Settings followed by BlackBerry Protect
  3. Set the BlackBerry Protect switch to On

1. BBM Instant Action

The next time you need to send someone a BBM message on your BlackBerry Q10, try using Instant Action to hop into a conversation with a specific contact quickly.

From the home screen, all you need to do is type ‘BBM’ followed by the name of the contact you’d like to message, e.g. bbm Ty. After doing this, tap the contact when they appear and you’ll be brought into a conversation window so you can start chatting.

If you’re using a BlackBerry Z10 with BlackBerry OS 10.1 you can use Instant Action too! Just tap the search icon along the bottom of the home screen followed by entering bbm <contact name>.
