BlackBerry 10 to PRIV Guide Part I

How-To

In this guide, we are going to discuss some PRIV features that you will want to know about. Many of these features will be familiar to you if you are a BlackBerry 10 user, although there are some differences which we will discuss. This includes:

How to set a lock screen password and add owner info

Setting a lock screen password adds an extra layer of protection to your device. For example, if I forget my device on the bus and someone finds it, they will not be able to access my phone without the correct password. Without a lock screen, anyone who picks up your device has access to your personal data so we cannot stress this option enough!

  1. Swipe down from the top of the screen once with two fingers, or twice with one finger
  2. Tap priv_ws_gear Settings > Security > Screen lock
  3. Within Screen lock select Pattern, PIN, or Password
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions

Tip: To increase security, set a short amount of time in the Automatically lock screen

In addition to setting a Screen lock we also recommend adding your Owner Info so if you misplace your device, whoever finds it knows how to contact you. For example, my device has a simple ‘If found call 123-456-7890’ message.

  1. Swipe down from the top of the screen once with two fingers, or twice with one finger
  2. Tap priv_ws_gear Settings > Security > Owner Info
  3. Check Show Owner info on lock screen
  4. Enter your lock screen message

How to change your notification settings

Here’s a few popular notification settings you’ll want to know.

Switch to Vibrate only

PRIVVibrate_screenshot_cutSwitching to vibrate is as simple as pressing the Volume Down key until your device vibrates. Alternatively, you can also press the Volume up or Volume down key, then tap the bell icon (circled in red).

Switch to Phone calls only

This is one of my favorite features, as I can turn off all phone calls, or only allow specific contacts to call me. In my case, these are family members that I’ve marked as a ‘favorite’ by tapping the star icon. Here’s how to enable Phone Calls Only:

  1. Swipe down from the top of the screen once with two fingers, or twice with one finger
  2. Tap priv_ws_gear Settings > Sound & notification
  3. Tap Interruptions
  4. Below Priority Interruptions, turn on Calls and select one of the following within Calls/Messages from:
    • Anyone
    • Starred contacts only
    • Contacts only

PriorityIntv2

After completing these steps, switch to the Priority notification profile and you will receive audible alerts only when someone calls you. To do this, press the Volume Up or Volume Down keys followed by tapping Priority. Finally, tap Indefinitely or set a length using the For X hours option.

Turn on Do Not Disturb

PRIVPriority_screenshot_cutFor times when you don’t want to be disturbed, take advantage of the Do Not Disturb function.

To place your device on Do Not Disturb mode, press the Volume Up or Volume Down key followed by tapping Do Not Disturb.

In this setting, you can choose to not be disturbed indefinitely or select a custom time range. For example, when I am studying for an exam and it is 12:00 PM, I set my device to “Do Not disturb until 3:00 PM.” I am then able to study for 3 hours without any distractions from friends or family!

How to manage mobile network & Wi-Fi connections

Mobile Network

If you haven’t already, insert your SIM into PRIV using the steps provided in the PRIV User Guide (PDF, HTML).

WARNING: Do not use a larger SIM card that was cut to a smaller size. Your device might not recognize the SIM card, or the SIM card might get stuck because it is thicker than a Nano SIM card.

Assuming your device has a SIM card with a wireless plan, here are three things you’ll want to know:

1. To turn off the mobile network connection, place your device into Airplane Mode. To do this, swipe down from the top of the display using two fingers, or one finger twice, followed by tapping Airplane Mode

2. To turn cellular data services on or off swipe down from the top of the display using two fingers, or one finger twice, followed by tapping Settings. Tap Data Usage and turn off the Cellular Data option

3. To manage cellular roaming settings, swipe down from the top of the display using two fingers, or one finger twice, followed by tapping Settings. Tap More followed by Cellular Networks. Within this menu, tap Data Service While Roaming. After doing this, tap On, Off or Prompt to get a notification when roaming.

Wi-Fi

To connect to a Wi-Fi network and manage previously set up Wi-Fi network connections, complete the following steps:

  1. Swipe down from the top of the screen once with two fingers, or twice with one finger
  2. To turn Wi-Fi on or off, tap the priv_wifi_qs Wi-Fi icon
  3. To connect to a Wi-Fi network, tap Wi-Fi and select an available network
  4. Enter the Wi-Fi network credentials and tap Connect

To delete a Wi-Fi network, tap Wi-Fi followed by tapping the three dot icon in the top right corner and, finally, tapping on Saved Networks. Within this menu, tap a Wi-Fi network followed by tapping Forget.

How to extend battery life

When PRIV reaches 15% remaining battery life, Battery Saver is turned on automatically, but it can also be turned on manually.  Simply put, Battery Saver limits features like vibration, location services, and background data to maximize battery life.

To turn on Battery saver, swipe down with two fingers from the top of the display followed by tapping on Battery saver.

To change when Battery Saver mode is enabled automatically, swipe down with two fingers from the top of the display and tap Settings followed by Battery. Within this menu, tap the three dot icon in the top right followed by Battery Saver to adjust the Turn On Automatically option.

How to monitor your data usage

Similar to BlackBerry 10, you can monitor cellular data usage on your PRIV. You can also set PRIV to warn you when you are close to exceeding your cellular data usage and turn off cellular data at a certain threshold to avoid overage fees.

Please note that your carrier may account for data usage differently, so setting a conservative limit could be beneficial in helping you stay within your data threshold.

To set a cellular data usage warning:

  1. Swipe down from the top of the screen once with two fingers, or twice with one finger
  2. Tap priv_ws_gear Settings > Data Usage
  3. Tap Cellular
  4. Drag the black warning line on the graph to select when you would like a warning notification to occur

To set a cellular data usage limit:

  1. Swipe down from the top of the screen once with two fingers, or twice with one finger
  2. Tap priv_ws_gear Settings > Data Usage
  3. Tap Cellular and turn on the Set cellular data limit
  4. Drag the orange limit line to set when cellular data is shut off

How to change your Wallpaper

To change your wallpaper, hold one finger down on a blank area of your home screen and tap Wallpapers when it appears along the bottom of your display. After doing this, you’ll be shown the option to select an image, such as a photo you’ve taken, a picture stored in Google Photos, or a preloaded wallpaper.

How to change your ringtone and default notification sound

PRIV includes a variety of preloaded ringtones and notification sounds and provides the ability to use a custom ringtone. To change your ringtone:

  1. Swipe down from the top of the screen once with two fingers, or twice with one finger
  2. Tap priv_ws_gear Settings > Sound & Notification > Phone ringtone
  3. Select a ringtone and then tap OK

To use your favorite song or another sound, copy the.mp3 file into the Ringtones folder in your device memory. Keep in mind that the ringtone will appear in the listing using its filename if the MP3 meta data, ID3 ‘track’ field is not completed. For more details, check out tip 5 in our Five Tip Friday, PRIV Sound & notification post.

To change your notification sound:

  1. Swipe down from the top of the screen once with two fingers or twice with one finger
  2. Tap priv_ws_gearSettings > Sound & Notification > Default notification ringtone
  3. Select from the various options to find your desired notification tone
    • Optionally select None to turn off notifications sounds completely

How to add a widget, shortcut or app icon to your home screen

You can add widgets and shortcuts to your home screen in addition to app icons of any apps or games you have installed.

A widget can be considered a mini-app that shows you relevant information on your home screen without having to open the app. For example, I have a BBM widget that shows my recent chats right on my home screen. Best of all, for those that want a clean home screen without widgets, you can take advantage of pop-up widgets!

A shortcut is just that, a shortcut to complete a task such as emailing my boss at work. One tap is all it takes to open the Hub and start composing a new email addressed to my boss🙂

To add a widget or shortcut to your home screen:

  1. Tap the gs_priv_allapps All apps icon
  2. Tap either Widgets or Shortcuts
  3. Press and hold down on a widget or shortcut then release your finger once the home screen appears
    • You may be prompted to set up a specific short cut (for example, an email contact shortcut may require you to choose which contact that you want to send an email to)

Pop-up Widgets

As mentioned earlier, pop-up widgets do not take up space on the home screen, but still allow you to access a widget by swiping up or down on the app icon using one finger.

Although the feature is enabled by default, if you have turned it off, we would encourage you to turn it on, as it provides an extremely convenient way to access at-a-glance data within your favorite apps.

  1. On the home screen, press and hold an empty space and tap the Settings icon
  2. Check the Pop up widgets check box
  3. On the home screen, swipe up or down on an app that has a pop-up widget, indicated by the three dots appearing below the icon.

You can change the pop up widget for an app by following these steps:

  1. Swipe down on an app icon
  2. Tap the 3 dots (…) in the upper right hand corner
  3. Select Change Widget
  4. Select another widget in the list of available widgets
