How to import contacts to a webmail service

Looking to ditch the cable and take advantage of wireless contact synchronization on your BlackBerry Z10 smartphone? If so, follow the three steps below to export your desktop email application contacts to a file followed by importing them into your webmail provider so you can enjoy the benefits of wireless contact synchronization.

Step 1 – Exporting contacts to a file on your computer

Listed below are the steps to export contacts from several popular email applications. If your email application or service is not listed, review the help information for your email application for assistance on exporting contacts to a file.

To export contacts to a file using Outlook® 2013 or 2010 for Microsoft® Windows®

  1. Open Outlook 2013 or 2010 for Microsoft Windows
  2. Select File followed by Options and click Advanced
  3. In the Export section, click Export
  4. In the Import and Export Wizard, select Export to a file and click Next
  5. Select Comma Separated Values
  6. Select your Contacts folder and click Next
  7. Follow the instructions to export your contacts and save the CSV file to your desktop

To export contacts to a file using Outlook 2007 for Microsoft Windows

  1. Open Outlook 2007 for Microsoft Windows
  2. Select File followed by Import and Export…
  3. Select Export to a file
  4. Select Comma Separated Values (Windows)
  5. Select your Contacts folder
  6. Save your exported contacts as a CSV file to your desktop

To export contacts to a file using Outlook 2011 for Mac

  1. Open Outlook 2011 for Mac
  2. Click File followed by Export
  3. Click Contacts to a list and follow the instructions provided
  4. Save the file to your desktop

Step 2 – Importing the file to a webmail service

At this point you should now have a file saved on your computer that contains your contacts so all we need to do now is import the file to your webmail provider. To do this I’ve listed the steps on how to import contacts for several popular webmail providers below. If your webmail provider isn’t listed, login to it and review the help documentation for guidance on importing contacts.

To import contacts to Outlook.com, Hotmail or Live

  1. Sign in to Outlook.com, Hotmail or Live
  2. Click the down arrow next to Outlook in the top-left corner and select People
    • If you do not have any contacts existing contacts, select Import from file
    • If you do have contacts however, select Manage followed by Import from file
  3. Follow the instructions to import your contacts to Outlook.com

To import contacts to Gmail®

  1. Sign in to Gmail
  2. Click Gmail in the top left corner and select Contacts
  3. Click More and select Import…
  4. Follow the instructions to import your contacts to Gmail

To Import contacts to Yahoo!® Mail

  1. Sign into Yahoo! Mail
  2. Select the Contacts tab along the top
  3. Select Import Contacts followed by Import from other accounts

Step 3 – Setting up wireless Contacts Synchronization on a BlackBerry 10 smartphone

After successfully exporting your contacts, all that’s left to do is add a new Contacts account to your BlackBerry Z10. Follow the steps below or watch the BlackBerry Account Setup How To Demo for information on how to add a contacts account and more.

Note: If you have already setup your webmail account on your BlackBerry Z10, you may have enabled Contact synchronization already but to double check, follow these steps

  1. Swipe down from the top of the Home screen on your BlackBerry Z10
  2. Tap Accounts
    • If you have not setup any accounts yet, tap Email, Calendar and Contacts
    • If you have already setup this account, verify that an entry for Contacts appears as per the first screenshot below. If so, proceed to step 5.
    • If you have already setup this account and an entry Contacts does not appear, tap Add Account
  3. Follow the instructions and enter your email address login details
  4. When prompted, verify that Sync Contacts is set to On
    • If you do not see the Sync Contacts option your webmail provider does not support wireless contact synchronization. For additional assistance, contact your webmail provider.
  5. You contacts will now synchronize over the air wirelessly
