How to enable Password Protection on a BlackBerry 10 smartphone

How-To

I don’t know about you, but my smartphone contains a lot of my personal information, and the last thing I’d want is someone to access my data without my consent. Since we run BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10, password protection is enforced by our IT folks, but if you’re on your own it’s still actually pretty easy to set up – all it takes is enabling password protection.

Check out the video below for a visual overview of how to enable password protection on your BlackBerry 10 smartphone, or follow the steps beneath the video.

Note: If you forget your password, it can’t be recovered. BlackBerry recommends that you back up your data regularly. By default, and for security reasons, your smartphone data is deleted if an incorrect password is entered 10 times in a row.

Enable password protection

  1. While viewing the Home screen, swipe down from the top bezel
  2. Select Settings > Security and Privacy > Device Password
  3. Set Device Password to On and enter your desired password

After enabling a password, there are three settings in the Password Lock section that you will want to review and customize to your desired settings:

  • Lock Device After Screen is Locked for – Using the dropdown menu, select how long you would like your device to wait before automatically locking on its own when left idle.
  • Allow Apps to Extend Password Lock Time – If this setting is On, it will allow apps, such as the videos app, to extend your password lock time so that you’re not interrupted.
  • Lock Device when Holstered – When On, and depending on which case or holster you are using with your BlackBerry 10 smartphone, inserting the smartphone into the case will automatically lock it.

After setting your desired password protection settings, here are a few more things you should know, such as how to lock and unlock your screen as well as how to change your password. You’ll also find instructions on how you can write a custom message that will be shown on your lock screen.

To lock your smartphone:

  1. Press and hold the Power/Lock key on the top of your device and select Lock.

To unlock your smartphone:

  1. Press the Power/Lock key on the top of your device
  2. Swipe up from the bottom bezel and enter your password when prompted.

To change or disable your password:

  1. While viewing the Home screen, swipe down from the top bezel
  2. Select Settings > Security and Privacy > Device Password
  3. Complete of the following steps:
    • To change your password, tap Change Device Password and follow the prompts
    • To disable your password, set Device Password to Off, and enter your password to confirm the change when prompted.

Setting a Custom Message on the Lock Screen

In addition to setting a password, you should consider setting a custom message that will appear on your lock screen. For example, I set a custom message that has my name and contact details: ‘If found, contact this phone number (XXX-XXX-XXXX) for a reward’.

  1. While viewing the Home screen, swipe down from the top bezel
  2. Select Settings > Display
  3. In the “Message displayed on locked screen” fields, enter your desired message
  4. When finished, hide the keyboard by tapping and holding the space bar, then tap Back to save your changes.
