Getting Started with Print To Go in BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0

How-To

Print To Go® is a new feature introduced in BlackBerry® PlayBook™ OS 2.0, which allows you to “print” documents from your computer to your BlackBerry PlayBook tablet. Instead of outputting to a printer, documents are conveniently converted to Adobe® PDF files and wirelessly transported to your BlackBerry PlayBook tablet where you can easily manage and organize them. You can use Print To Go to “print” any file – including documents, webpages, diagrams and more.

Here’s an overview of how to get started with Print To Go – a valuable app I strongly recommend checking out!

In order to use Print To Go, you’ll need to install some software on your Microsoft® Windows™ computer first. After installing this software, Print To Go will appear as a printer in your system and whenever you select Print To Go as the printer, your content will be converted to a PDF file and sent wirelessly to your BlackBerry PlayBook tablet. You can then use the Print To Go app on the BlackBerry tablet to view, sort and manage the digital printouts you created from sources like web pages, documents, emails or other apps.

Step 1 – Installing Print To Go

In order to use Print To Go, you must have Windows® XP or higher installed on your computer, and your computer and your BlackBerry tablet must be connected on the same wireless network. Print To Go is not currently available for Mac OS X.

Provided you meet the system requirements, you can download the Print To Go software for your computer at http://www.blackberry.com/PrintToGo. After the file has been downloaded successfully, double click on it and follow the instructions to install Print To Go on your computer.

Step 2 – Print a File to your BlackBerry PlayBook tablet

After installing the Print To Go software on your computer, the next time you are viewing something you’d like to print to your BlackBerry PlayBook tablet, click “Print” from the document, then select the “Print To Go” option from the list of available Printers for your computer. You will then be prompted to enter your BlackBerry® ID. While entering your BlackBerry ID credentials, you can optionally check the ‘Remember me on this computer’ option to avoid having to enter your credentials every time you use Print To Go.

Since this is the first time you are using Print To Go, you’ll need to pair your BlackBerry PlayBook tablet with your computer. To locate the pairing password, launch the Print To Go app on your tablet, swipe down from the top bezel and select Settings to view the Desktop PC Pairing Password. After entering the pairing code, click “Next”, then enter a File Name followed by selecting “Print” and the printout will be sent to your BlackBerry PlayBook tablet.

Step 3 – Managing Print To Go content

After you’ve printed some content, managing it on the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet is really easy – just open the Print To Go app and you’ll be presented with the following display:

To help you out, listed below are the steps for managing documents created using Print To Go:

Change views: If your BlackBerry PlayBook tablet is BlackBerry® Balance technology enabled, use the toggle that appears in the top left corner of Print To Go to change views between Work and Personal.

View a printout: On the Print To Go main screen, tap the folder that contains the printout followed by tapping on the printout.

View printouts by category: On the Print To Go main screen, tap “Date”, “Title”, “Size” or “My Folders”.

File printouts into folders: Touch and hold a printout and drag it to the folder you want to file it into. You can also drag the printout to “New Folder” to create a new folder.

Create a new folder: From within a category or folder, swipe down from the top bezel and tap “New Folder”.

Filter your results: Tap the Filter button followed by selecting the type of files you’d like to view.

Search for a printout: Tap “Search All” and enter part or the entire printout name to start searching your printouts.

Mark a printout as a favorite: From within a category or file, tap the “Favorites” icon (Star) next to the printout you want to mark as a favorite.

Delete a file: Swipe down from the top bezel, tap “Edit”, then select the checkbox beside the file(s) that you want to delete. Once you’ve made the selection(s) tap the “Delete” button . To cancel the deletion, tap the “Cancel” icon.
