Smart Dialing: Make your BlackBerry smartphone transcend area codes and countries

How-To

What is Smart Dialing? This feature allows you to specify a default country code and area code for phone numbers in the Contacts application. This will prevent you from having to dial a country code and area code every time that you make a call, unless the country code or area codes are different from the default codes that you set. Pretty useful for frequent users of the “Phone” feature of BlackBerry® smartphones!

Learn what Smart Dialing is and how to set it up using the video above and the steps below. To learn more about your BlackBerry smartphone, be sure to check out the specific user guide.

Set the default country code and area code

    1. From the Home screen, press the “Send” key.
    2. Press the Menu key and select “Options” followed by “Smart Dialing”.
    3. Set the Country Code and Area Code fields.

  1. If necessary, set the Local Country Code field and International Dialing Digits field.
  2. In the National Number Length field, set the default length for phone numbers in your country.
  3. Press the Menu key and select “Save”.

Note: When you determine the default length for phone numbers, include your area code and local number, but don’t include your country code or the National Direct Dialing prefix. (Something to keep in mind as well is that some country codes aren’t supported by the Smart Dialing feature).

Set options for dialing internal extensions

If you call an organization frequently, you can also set your Smart Dialing options so that you do not have to type the organization’s main number.

    1. From the Home screen, press the “Send” key.
    2. Press the Menu key followed by “Options” then select “Smart Dialing”.

  1. In the Number field, type the main phone number for an organization.
  2. In the Wait For field, set how long your BlackBerry smartphone waits before dialing an extension.
  3. In the Extension Length field, set the default length for extensions.
  4. Press the Menu key and select “Save”.

To use this feature with work contacts that have internal extensions, place an X before the extension either in the phone application or in the phone field of the contact. This feature is designed to automatically dial the extension.
