Five Tip Friday – BlackBerry Messenger 6.0

Five Tip Friday

BBM

It’s Five Tip Friday! With the recent release of BlackBerry® Messenger (BBM™) 6.0, I wanted to share five tips that I think every BlackBerry Messenger user should be taking advantage of!

1 – Back up and restore your BBM contacts

BBM provides you with a few ways to back up and restore your BBM information, which can include your contacts, profile, and group membership. By default, BBM saves a backup file of your BBM information to your smartphone when your contact list changes. However, you can save a backup file to your smartphone or media card manually at any time. You may also be able to set BBM to automatically back up and restore your contact list over the wireless network to a BBM server that is operated by or on behalf of Research In Motion® (RIM®) (this is my preferred method).

For information about these backup methods and how to use them, check out the BlackBerry Messenger 6 User Guide.

2 – Link BBM contacts with the Contacts app

You can now link a BBM contact with a contact in the Contacts (Address Book) app. When you have a linked contact between BBM and your Contacts (Address Book), you may be able to perform additional tasks using BlackBerry Messenger. For example, during a chat, you may be able to quickly call or send an email message to the same contact from the BlackBerry Messenger menu as per the screenshot below instead of having to open the Contacts (Address Book) app. If a contact does not have a display picture in their BBM profile, the profile picture from their Contacts application will appear in BBM instead.

BBM

To link a BBM contact with an address book contact, complete the following steps:

1. Open BBM and highlight a contact
2. Press the Menu key and select Link with BlackBerry® Contact

  • If the contact is in the Contacts app already, click Select Contact
  • If the contact is not in the Contacts app, click New Contact and enter the user’s contact information

To unlink a contact, complete the following steps:

1. Open BBM and highlight a contact
2. Press the Menu key and select Remove Link with BlackBerry Contact

3 – Receive text messages from your BBM contacts in BBM

Simply put, this feature allows you to send and receive text messages and BBM messages in the BBM app*. On top of normal BBM messages, you can receive text messages from and send text messages to BBM contacts while using BBM. In order to use this feature, you must have linked a BlackBerry Messenger contact with a contact that has a phone number in the Contacts app on your BlackBerry smartphone. In the screenshot below, you can see how a contact that uses text messaging appears while using BlackBerry Messenger.

BBM

To be able to text message a BBM contact that is linked to your address book, complete the following steps:

1. Open BBM, press the Menu key and select Options
2. Select the Show Text Messages From Contacts Linked with BlackBerry Contacts checkbox
3. Press the Menu key and select Save

4 – Adding a new contact that uses text messaging only

You can also add new contacts that solely use text messages to communicate. To start chatting with friends who use text messages only*, complete the following steps:

1. Open BBM, press the Menu key and select Invite to BBM
2. Select Add a contact to text within BBM
3. Enter the contacts information
4. Select Add Contact

5 – Personalize your BBM sounds

Stand out from the crowd by customizing the notification sounds that trigger whenever someone messages you specifically, whenever there is activity in a BBM group you are a member of, and the BBM alert notification. To change which notifications are used, you’ll need to review your Sound and Alert Profiles on your BlackBerry smartphone. If you do not know how to change your Sound and Alert Profiles, I strongly recommend reviewing the user guide for your BlackBerry smartphone and selecting BlackBerry Smartphone Manuals. The section in particular that you’ll want to review is Ring tones, sounds and alerts.

What do you like the most about BlackBerry Messenger? Leave a comment and let me know :)

* Text messages sent through the BBM app will still be treated as a text message and charged as such in your data plan.
